A dashboard showing plant availability can reveal that time was lost without explaining what management can change. Useful operating information connects the stopped hour with its cause, affected function and the decision needed to reduce recurrence.

Choose categories people understand

Delay codes should reflect the operation and be usable by the people recording events. Too few categories hide meaningful differences; too many encourage inconsistent selection. The reporting team should test whether different shifts classify the same event similarly. Without that consistency, comparisons can reflect recording habits rather than genuine changes in the plant's performance.

Preserve the event account

A code alone may not capture the sequence that caused the interruption. Short, relevant notes can connect the initial event with subsequent delays and the action taken. This matters when one equipment problem creates several consequences. Counting each consequence independently can exaggerate the number of separate failures while obscuring the common issue that deserves attention.

Focus on recurring patterns

Management should examine repeated and consequential losses rather than pursuing every minor variation with equal effort. The analysis needs appropriate technical input and enough context to avoid a premature diagnosis. A useful review ends with an accountable action or a specific investigation, not simply another chart showing that the same category remains prominent this month.

Check whether action helped

Follow-up should compare later experience with the expected effect of the intervention. Other changes may influence the result, so interpretation needs care. For investors, the important capability is the learning cycle between observation and action. A colourful dashboard becomes valuable when the enterprise can show how its information changed a decision and whether the operating problem subsequently became better understood or less disruptive.
