An executive receives an introduction to a potential partner with a warm endorsement but little explanation of the work. The next meeting repeats the first conversation and leaves both sides uncertain about the purpose. A useful referral transfers enough commercial context to make the new relationship productive without sharing information the customer did not intend to circulate.

Define the assignment

The referring party can explain the problem, likely timing and the capability being sought. A business seeking equipment funding needs a different conversation from one seeking an operating partner. Naming the distinction prevents an impressive network from becoming a sequence of poorly matched meetings that consume management attention without moving the opportunity toward a workable next step.

Agree what travels

Commercial context may include sensitive figures or plans. The customer should understand which information will be passed and why it helps the receiving organisation assess fit. A concise agreed brief is often more useful than forwarding an entire presentation, especially where the deck contains material intended for a different audience or an earlier stage of the discussion.

Avoid implied endorsement

The introduction should not silently become a guarantee of capability, funding or outcome. Both parties still need to assess the assignment. Clear wording about the reason for the connection helps preserve trust while allowing a genuine evaluation, rather than forcing either side to proceed merely because the introduction came from a respected relationship.

Close the feedback loop

A short update on whether the connection was relevant improves future referrals. It can reveal that the customer needed a different specialist or was not ready for the conversation. The value of a partner network grows through that learning, as introductions become more precise and the customer's time is treated as part of the commercial relationship.
